A view from the bridge - eddie and catherines relationship
Eddie and Catherine are two important characters form the play “A View From The Bridge” by Arthur Miller. The play takes place in Brooklyn around 1950’s. Catherine is an orphan who grew up with her aunt and her aunt’s husband. She sees them as her parents. Eddie who is her aunt’s husband is like a real father to Catherine. Eddie and Catherine’s relationship changes from father and daughter to woman and man throughout the play. This change affects everybody around them and causes problems which ends tragically. In the play there are several main stages that show us the changes in Eddie and Catherine’s relationship. These stages are usually small incidents but each of them develops a new point to the relationship. The first point is on page 6 where Eddie starts commenting on Catherine’s skirt then goes on to criticize her walk and her actions. In that conversation Catherine says, “ “Eddie, I wish there was one guy you couldn’t tell me things about!” This dialogue shows that Eddie has been overprotective before and Catherine has realized it. She does not say it seriously but rather, a joke; however she is actually trying to express that he’s being too overprotective. St
When Marco and Rodolpho arrive on page 16, Catherine is shocked by Rodolpho at that point you can actually feel that something is going to come up between those two. Eddie senses that something is going to happen between Catherine and Rodolpho and that’s why when they chat together he usually addresses Marco only and in some cases ignores Rodolpho or cuts through his sentences. Catherine fancies Rodolpho that’s why she especially tries to ask questions directly to Rodolpho. On page 21 while Rodolpho is singing Catherine gets so amazed that Eddie does not like it. Eddie attacks Catherine for no reason. He asks her to take off her high heel shoes. On those two pages 21 and 22 you can see that Eddie does not like Rodolpho, mainly because he is starting to flirt with Catherine. On page 22 at the dinner table Eddie makes a comment about the incident that just happened which was Catherine wearing high heels and Rodolpho makes a silly comment. After Rodolpho’s comment in the stage direction for Eddie we can see his dislike for Rodolpho is starting to turn to hatred. The stage direction is: “he is sizing up Rodolpho, and there is a concealed suspicion”. This is important in Eddie’s and Catherine’s relationship because Rodolpho’s arrival and their relationship between Catherine is the thing that puts Eddie’s feeling on the surface. At that point we start to understand that Eddie is not just being overprotective he is actually jealous of any man that is attracted to Catherine. On page 39 Eddie in a normal dinner tries to express to Rodolpho that he’s powerful. He does this by acting like he’s teaching boxing to Rodolpho but actually hurting him by this he’s trying to get through the message that she’s mine in a male way like animals fighting for the female animal and showing him who’s more powerful. Marco realizes that Eddie’s real intentions are to hurt Rodolpho so he does a trick with the chair without any force and shows who is more powerful. A small family relationship ended in tragedy, but was all the hurting necessary? Eddie’s and Catherine’s relationship as Catherine grew changed from father and daughter to man and woman. Catherine, Beatrice and Alfieri all knew how this harmless relationship was going to end but nobody tried to stop it, and when they tried to stop it was too late. Eddie started this relationship with the feelings of overprotection that turned into jealousy, hatred and anger. Catherine on the other hand probably did not know that love of him was going to be so deep, and was only going to finish with death. Eddie was full of ambition and hatred that he never saw what was going outside of him. His only desire was to have Catherine but he knew he couldn’t, he did not accept he wanted her but deep down that was his only desire. Like Alfieri says at the end of the play “it is better to settle for half, it must be!
