Chapter summaries of Catcher in the Rye

In the first chapter of “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger, the narrator, Holden Caulfield, tells us quite a few things about himself and his family. He has on brother that is in the movie writing business and as far as his parents are concerned we find out that they are nice, but irritated easily. He, up until now, attended a school named Pencey Preparatory School, in Angresown, Pennsylvania. He has been expelled from his school because he wasn’t attentive enough, although he was the manager of the fencing team. The story starts off with him standing on the top of a hill next to his ex-school, watching a football game between his school and Saxon Hall, thinking about saying goodbye to Pencey and preparing to go over to his teacher, Mr. Spencer’s’, house as he was asked to do. The chapter ends with his being greeted by Mrs. Spencer and her telling him to enter Mr. Spencer’s’ room

The second chapter of the book mentions the actual conversation between Holden Caulfield and Mr. Spencer. Mr. Spencer, sick as he is, tries to lecture Holden about how his life is a game and how he should start caring about his future. He also tries to explain why he made Holden fail

The next day Holden calls Sally Hayes, a girl who goes to Mary A. Woodruff School. He talks about her seeming smart at fist because of her vast knowledge on literature and theatre but if you get to know her she isn’t actually all that smart. He makes a date to meet her and she keeps on going on and on on the phone about things that don’t really interest him. After they hang up he mentions his parents and what they do. He tells that his father is a wealthy corporation attorney and that his mother hasn’t been all that well ever since Allie died. He goes to the Grand Central station and goes somewhere to eat breakfast. There he sees two nuns going in with cheap suitcases. That reminds him of his roommate at Elkton Hills, Dick Slage, who also had cheap suitcases. He started up a conversation with the nuns, he donated some money and, after talking about “Romeo and Juliet” with the wonders what they think about all the romance.
