Rapture of canaan and memoirs of a geisha
I chose to read my second book, Rapture of Canaan, as I found my first one very thought provoking and wanted to read something very similar. The characters in both of these books experience events that I will never in my life experience, and I love to read about other cultures. Memoirs of a Geisha and Rapture of Canaan are both books that focus on one girl, and the way that she deals with her culture. The characters both experience traditions performed by their cultures, and share their most intimate feelings about everything that goes on in their lives. The areas I will be elaborating on are characterization, setting and issues. Characterization is one topic that can be greatly compared. The two novels can be characterized as inciting in general. I’ve found that in both novels I haven’t been able to relate to the characters really, but have felt for them and their situations. In my first novel, the main character, Chiyo, was very passive and did what she was told, but opened up about her feelings towards them, and with such great detail I felt like I was there. It has affected my life greatly. In my second
novel, the character was more independent and stands up for what she believes in. Ninah opens up to a lot of detail that goes on behind closed doors, that a lot of the characters do not realize is happening to her. We can all relate to this, which is why it stirs emotions in its readers. The issues that each character goes through are quite similar. The issues in the first novel with Chiyo are generally just personal problems about how she copes living in such a different society than she has been used to. The issues that Chiyo has are morality issues. She doesn’t always agree with what she has had to do in being a Geisha, but being very passive, she doesn’t make much fuss about it and keeps it in. Ninah, in the second novel, tends to act very dramatic with her issues. When she has a problem, she cannot keep it in, and tortures herself for it. “I put sandspurs in my own bed and pecan shells in my shoes to remind me with every step of how Jesus had suffered,” (Page 74). Ninah’s problems are a little more extreme because Ninah thinks that she will go to hell if she doesn’t “feel Jesus’ pain,” ever
