Superpower ResponsibilitiesThe question of whether the United States of America, as the only current superpower in the world, has the responsibility to protect the rights of people everywhere, does not have an unqualified answer. In a perfect world, from the United States Government’s point of view, all people of the world should be free and governed by a democratic form of government. In addition, in this perfect world, the United Nations (UN) should have a major role in ensuring, through diplomatic means, human rights of all people, in all countries, are protected. However, this perfect world does not exist, and we must deal with the reality of the real world. The Charter of the United Nations, which came into legal force on October 24, 1924, states in the preamble “WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINES… to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in equal rights of men and women of the nations as large and small,…”.
