LASIK Correction of Myopia

LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis), the most commonly performed type of laser surgery, is an effective treatment for a wide range of vision problems. It improves vision and reduces the need for glasses and/or contacts. “Medically, in situ means confined to the site of origin without invasion of neighboring tissues. Kerato is the Greek word for cornea and mileusis means ‘to shape.’” (http://www.lasikinstitute.org/FAQ.html) It obtains this result by permanently changing the shape of the cornea, the clear covering on the front of the eye (Figure 1). The process for correcting myopia (near-sightedness) is quick and painless. The whole surgical procedure only takes approximately twenty minutes. Healing of the cornea begins immediately.

1. The patient is first given an oral dose of valium to help them to relax. The longest part of the whole LASIK proces

2. The patient lies prone on an operating table with the laser machinery above them. Numbing drops are put into the eyes.

LASIK cannot provide perfect vision for every patient; however, for the majority, the surgery improves vision and reduces the need for corrective eyewear. While there are many other types of eye surgeries to improve vision out there, LASIK is a quick and painless way to rid one of myopia. Where once a patient could see clear images of near objects, but not those that were far away without glasses or contacts, now he has reduced or no dependence on eyewear almost immediately.

9. The patient will rest for a bit before going home – long enough for staff to check to make sure the corneal flap has bonded itself back into position. This could be as little time as five minutes.
