The Weakness of the Unknown

Though-out life people deal with the good and the bad and then learn from their experiences. Early in life, we all are forced to make decisions we may not be ready to make, but through these decisions we learn. It is evident in these short stories that young characters as well as older make bad decisions and have to deal with their consequences. In “Greasy Lake” by T. Coraghessan Boyle, three bad character’s play a joke on what they think is their friend’s car and risk their lives. In “A+P” by John Updike, a young man quits his job to impress a few girls, and in “The Cathedral”, an adult judges a blind man before he has ever-meet one. These short stories reveal the consequences that come from the inexperience of life and how through time, people will learn from their mistakes.

At first the boys assume that this is one of their good friends and it was all a big joke. Soon the boy’s have a realization and begin to notice that this isn’t Tony’s car. Their inexperience causes them to act fast and assume, this cost them and they risk their lives. It gets worse for the boys when their minds tell them to stay and not get out of their as soon as possible, “We were on her like Bergman’s deranged brothers – see no evil, hear none, speak none – panting, wheezing, tearing at her clothes, grabbing for flesh.”(Pg 115). At this point, the boys should have realized their mistake and removed themselves from the situation. Instead they take it the next step and bring their lives into danger again. The boy’s consequences for their mistakes were their threat of death. After raping the girl they are caught red handed by a couple of guys who tell them, “You sons a bitche
