The Glass Menagerie

In fiction, as in life, people could be classified as achievers or as failure. Achievers would be people who accomplish their dreams and attain their goals. People who are failures would never arrive at their goals or become better people. In the play, The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, Amanda is a failure while both of her children, Tom and Laura, are both successful.

The mother, Amanda, never changes and as a result, is a failure. She is still living in her past, with her seventeen gentlemen callers and popularity. When conversations are brought up about Laura’s life, Amanda always finds a way for it to be about her. She brings up her past, and even when Jim comes to see Laura, Amanda dresses up as though she is being called upon. Now, as a mother, she depends on her children to care for her. Tom works to pay for the home and bills associated with it. Everything in their home is about Amanda


Laura, the daughter, also improves her life and situation. After being treated as an invalid for her whole life by Amanda, she has no self-confidence at all. Amanda babied her so much that Laura could not even remain in school without being terrified. She was sheltered from the real world and protected from the evil. When Jim, her gentlemen caller, comes and visits with Laura, she finally realizes that she is quite normal. He breaks her unicorn’s horn off, making it the same as everyone else and no longer unique. At this instant, Laura also realizes she is not unique and can be the same as the rest of the world. Jim helps her realize her potential and opens her up to be able to talk to people outside her family. She will probably not be suffocated by her mother as she now knows what is available in the world for her. By the end of the play, Laura has significantly changed.
