Leslie McFarlane

“Canada’s best selling author of all time,” is what Bruce W. Taylor says about Canadian literature’s hero Leslie McFarlane. Today, Leslie McFarlane is more commonly known as Franklin W. Dixon. He did most of his writing beginning just before the Great Depression and into the 1970’s. He also used many pen names to conceal his true identity. His books were loved by all even though no one knew who he really was until his work for the Stratemeyer Syndicate ended. He wrote for practically all types of publications including magazines, newspapers, radio, television, film, and wrote many books as well.

McFarlane was born in Carleton Place, Ontario on October 25, 1902. He had three brothers and no sisters. He was a small, scrawny kid. His father John became the principal at a school after his father had accepted the position in the town of Haileybury, Ontario. McFarlane grew up as a kid in this small town. He attended Haileybury Public School as a kid. This is also where his father was the principal. “He was a voracious reader who…would dive into his fathers extensive collection of books.” (Ricketts).

McFarlane entered high school when he was fourteen years old. He had many jo

bs, off and on. He ran errands for the bank as a junior bank clerk, on occasion would deliver the Saturday Evening Post, and operated the Grand Theatre’s projector.

“It is through the books that Leslie McFarlane wrote for the Stratemeyer Syndicate that we know him today.” (Keeline, Writings of). His excellent work for Edward Stratemeyer has gotten McFarlane the fame he now has today. Edward Stratemeyer was an author of children’s novels. He couldn’t keep up with the demand for books, so he created pen names for some of his novels so that other authors could write for the same series under the same name. This was so that he could produce material for his publishers at a pace faster than he could do alone. McFarlane was one of the authors that Stratemeyer used to write for him.
