Ta for the memories

The theme of “Ta for the Memories” is the importance of one’s past. The past will always affect you, even though it is not there anymore. For most people there are of course some experiences or adventures, which they will never forget, but they don’t necessarily influence their lives. It is more the past life in whole, and in particular the childhood, which affects you all through your life. In “Ta for the Memories” Edith is the one on whom the past has had and has a positive affect, while Kenny’s past has influenced him in such a negative way, that he has become an alcoholic living alone and having forgotten most of his past because of the drugs he has taken.

Another important aspect of the text is how the media can some times give people the impression that pop stars, or other famous people, live perfect lives. They show us their huge houses, sumptuous wardrobes etc. But what they don’t show us is what’s behind all this, and what their lives are really like. The media can often idealize these well-known persons, and that is what they have done to Kenny in “Ta for the memories”.

“Ta for the memories” was written in 1994, and because of this and since the program “Top

In the end Edith asks Kenny to write “Ta for the memories” in his book. She thereby means that they are both thankful for the memories they have gotten from each other.

I believe that Edith’s life is and has been less wild but more content than Kenny’s. For example she describes her childhood in Oxfordshire as sunlit. I think she is satisfied with her life, but I don’t think that she has ever been the daring type. She has never done anything extreme, even though she maybe has wanted to. Edith says on the second last page that she has a beautiful voice, but even though she can actually sing, she has never dared trying to become a pop star like Kenny. The fact that she, as she says in the beginning of the story, doesn’t know anything about pop music and has never heard about Kenny, shows that she is not a modern woman. This is opposed to all her female colleagues who all “know” Kenny. Or rather they think they know him, because of all the things they have read in the magazines or seen on TV. The problem is that they know nothing about the person he really is. When Edith visits him, she sees the depressed and sad person he in fact is, and not the sexy and handsome type her girlfriends had on mind.

His rough past has probably led him to his addiction to drugs and alcohol, maybe in attempt to forget has past.

of the pops” is mentioned (a program which still runs on BBC) I believe the story takes place in the early 90’s. Most of the story takes place in Kenny’s house in Nice in South France, but we start out a
