Babtista’s words throughout the play show he is more affectionate and favorable of his younger daughter Bianca than his elder Katherine. As suitors approach Babtista’s house we see in the movie Katherine yelling and throwing things out of the window. As the suitors talk to Babtista about courting his youngest daughter Bianca, Katherine continues her charade of insulting the men. Babtista at seeing this consoles Bianca by telling her, “let it not displease you good Bianca, I will love the ne’er the less my girl. After a seemingly easy match between Petruchio and Katherine, Petruchio leaves to buy wedding clothes. The remaining men discuss the match and Babtista tells them that he is playing the merchants part. He admits that he is treating the marriage of his daughter Katherine as a sort of business exchange. He calls the marriage of his daughter Katherine a desperate mart, insulting her and being less of a father and more of a businessman. As Petruchio rides away he tells the remaining men to, “Have faith gentlemen, now I play the merchants part and venture madly on a desperate mart.(II,i)” While discussing the dowry that will be exchanged for Petruchio’s wedding Katharine, Babtista treats it as a business matter and not a family matter. Babtista talks of Katherine as if she were property and not his own flesh and blood. He tells Petruchio of what he is titled to after Babtista dies, and what he will obtain if he gains Katherine’s love. Babtista in many ways pays Petruchio off to court and marry his older daughter. They treat the marriage as a business exchange; Babtista states to Petruchio that after he dies he will give Petruchio, “One half of my lands, and in possession twenty-thousand crowns.(II,i)” Babtista will give Petruchio twenty-thousand crowns if he marries Katherine. After the marriage of Katherine is arranged he moves on to negotiating the marriage of Bianca, this is also done in a business fashion. The men unlike in Katherine’s case are willing to fight over Bianca, the fairer daughter.
