Is Turner Thesis Valid?” 1

In the past, there were two major theories of the understanding, the economic interpretation of politics associated with Charles A. Beard, and the frontier interpretation of American development with Frederick Jackson Turner. Charles A. Beard, was much against Turners vision, yet he can be proven incorrect with Turners theory. Turner, like all easterners, was an evolutionist concerned with political forms; however, in contrast to other academic scholars, who laid reliance on racial heredity and self-determined growth, Turner looked for the influence of environment. The Adams school particularly, or the scholars, “were paying far too much attention to the European ‘germs’ of American institutions, and far too little to the American soil in which these ‘germs’ had grown,” according to Turner. He wanted to challenge the academic minds to new possibilities with his thesis. Turner’s thesis clearly states, “The existence of an area of free land; its continuous recession, and the advance of American settlement westward explain American development”. One can easily agree with this statement as
