Motivation,theories and principles

Motivation, Theories and Principles

Motivation is a way in which we gear our selves or to reach a goal, or to reach success. Motivation is used in every case. There is an old saying you can take a horse to the water but you cannot force it to drink, it will drink only if it's thirsty - so with people. We will do what they want to do or otherwise motivated to do, whether it is to reach high grades or to gain knowledge, we must be motivated or driven to it, either by ourselves or through external stimulus.

For a student to feel motivated, I believe that they must have an inner desire to learn. As I feel that if students are forced to learn information that they have no interest in, then they will not be motivated. Also a student must feel inspired by what they are learning, otherwise they will not reach academic success.

There are several factors that motivate me as a student, these are to have an interest in the subject I am learning, to reach my personal performance levels, to know within myself that I am doing the correct work and not confusing myself with information that I am not really fully aware about, whether I shall gain knowledge from what I am learning and also the most important for me is the final outcom

Moving to the next level is the social need. So that we can have a sense of belonging, I feel that when questioning others and myself ‘will I reach academics success’, I am interacting with my tutors, fellow students, friends and family. As I know that I can keep my performance level consistent, I can gain support from these people, as I am reassured that I will be able to reach my aims. Also by interacting with fellow students I can begin to understand that it is not only I that have these doubts, and is a common question asked by students. This motivates me to achieve as much or more than them. It’s a competitive feeling that motivates me to do better than the other students.

The two theorists that I will relate my own motivation factors to are; Maslows Hierarchy of Needs and Herzberg's motivation Hygiene theory.

These hygiene factors that I face as a student are de motivators as feeling unsafe, de motivates me to study late at university. The lack of facilites or books de motivate me as I feel like giving up. All these afctors can act as a de mpotivatos but many factors such as meeting deadlines, rules and regulations and working under pressure are all apert of being a student. I tend not to focus so much on what dissatisfies me .
