Danger of Controversial Music
Over the centuries, people throughout the world have accepted controversial music as part of their life. Some may have interpreted the meanings of the lyrics seriously and considered them as one of the factors that has been damaging their society as well as their livelihood. Others simply laid their visions within the limits of entertainment. The two contradicting ideas started in the 1970’s, when hip-hop was introduced as a form of entertainment (“Contemporary Urban Music”). This new fashion became very popular among the youngsters because it allowed them to freely express their feeling without any fear of punishment. Many people said that the lyrics reflected on the society that they live in. Many assume that no harm could result from projecting things that lies within reality, while others pointed out that hip-hop music is a way for kids to learn about violence through the lyrics being used. Some may say that lyrics of some controversial songs are the factors that bring danger to society, but others claim that controversial music is not the only cause of social problems. Looking at the lyrics of controversial music at a concrete level may lead people to think it is the real threat to soc
iety. For example, in the ‘So Solid Crew’s’ music, most of their songs express “glorifying gun culture and violence” and encouraged men to use weapons as “fashion statements” (Gibbons). Still, this is not the only controversial band that promotes violence in their lyrics; however, most controversial artists promote large sums of violence in their works. “Gansgta’ Bitch” is an example of how the audience of their songs interpret the idea of committing crimes against women for their own pleasure. Words in “Gansgta’ Bitch” involve “I need a gangsta’ bitch/… stickin’ up girls from around the fuckin’way/…on Valentine’s Day doin’ stickups together” (Apache qtd. in “Contemporary Urban Music”). A crime that was committed recently by an 18-year-old was said to have been caused by the influence of controversial music that he listened to. ‘Fight Music’ was the song sung by Eminem that he listened to, and was assumed to be the cause of his attack on an old man on the street (Littleton). Eminem’s lyrics include violent imageries, such as those on raping women and setting up groups of friends to take his little sister’s virginity on her birthday (Morris and Rebecca). There are still many debates going on in the world between people of different groups and ages. Some believe that the lyrics of controversial music bring danger to society, while some contradict saying that these lyrics are just reflecting the negative issues of society. Yet, it is unsure whether which point of view is correct, but there is truth in both of these ideas. As a matter of fact, it is one’s own desire to listen to controversial music and act in a violent way, which can cause them pain in their lifetime. While others may desire to censor the truth of the society, others may be blind to the truth and not be aware of what is really going on within the society. Therefore, as one is doing the issue of controversial music, there may be changes in perspective, because one can then see how controversial music is related to the danger toward society. It can also be said that one may see a wider rang
