Fences-Death of a Salesman Essay
Many times in life, father-son relationships breakup or deteriorate as a result of the actions of the father. This has been readily shown through the play “Fences” by August Wilson and the movie of the play, “Death of a Salesman” directed by Volker Schlondorf. In these two plays as in life, the sins and faults of the father lead to the deterioration and destruction of the father-son relationship. As a result of the ruined relationships, the sons in both plays failed to achieve their dreams which they might have been able to accomplish otherwise. In “Fences”, the father-son relationship is between Troy Maxson and Cory Maxson was deteriorated as a result of Troy‘s actions. Troy and Cory had never got along very well with each other, during their lives together. This quote from Cory truly exemplifies their relationship. “You ain’t never gave me nothing! You ain’t never done nothing but hold me back. Afraid I was gonna be better than you. All you ever did was try and make me scared of you. I used to tremble every time you called my name. Every time I heard your footsteps in the house. Wondering all the time . . . what’s Papa gonna say if I do this? . . . What’s he gonna say if I do that? . . . What’s Papa
To add to this, Troy’s act of adultery with Alberta further worsen Troy and Cory’s relationship. Troy had continually lied about his affair, claiming that he was going to Taylors instead. When Troy did admit to his affair with Alberta, he excused his behavior by expressing that spending time with Alberta allowed him to provide an illusion of accomplishment and escape from responsibility. Troy says, “Then when I saw that gal…I got to thinking that if I tried…I just might be able to steal second.” ( p.70 ) This certainly added to Cory’s frustration of his father and further strained their relationship. Biff’s continual failure had been mostly due as a result of Willy having an affair. Biff had found out about the affair when he decided to go to Boston and talk with his father. The teenage Biff arrived at the hotel in Boston and told Willy about how he failed math, and begged his father to talk to his math teacher. Biff heard and then saw the woman, who was hiding in the bathroom. Willy tried to lie to Biff, telling him that the woman is merely there to take a shower because she is staying in the next room, where the water is broken, but Biff realizes what has occurred. Willy admits the affair to Biff, but promises that the woman meant nothing to him and that he was lonely. Biff, finding out about the woman in Willy’s hotel room, begins his course of self-destructive behavior. As a result of this, Biff didn’t attend summer school in order to pass the math course and therefore didn’t go to the University of Virginia. He did this primarily out of spite after finding his father having an affair with another woman.
