Raical Red
Personal sacrifice and volunteerism are two of many things that a need by a society to survive. They are not something that is needed by everyone every single day but little bits from different people every once in a while really does help the society that we live in, even if you do not think it does. In Radical Red these two tings are shown in the preparation of women suffrage convention that took place in Albany, New York. Two people that showed these things the most in this book were Nora O’Shea and her daughter Connor O’Shea. These two women go through terrible things just for what they believe in which was women suffrage. The O’Shea family was living in Albany, New York when the suffrage movement was occurring. Connor would go to school during weekdays and sometimes walk the way with her father; her mother, Nora, would stay home and do laundry for the senators family; and her father, Donal, was the sergeant of the capitol police hoping to someday be the captain. When the “crazy women” came to town is when their lives would be turned upside down. Connor’s father hated these “crazy women” and what they were fighting for too. Unlike her father Connor was interested in the suffrage movement and the
Nora and her daughter sacrificed their lives to help with this movement, they were beaten for what they believed in. They also sacrificed their home and work to be there everyday to help out with whatever was needed. Everyday they volunteered to help out with; preparing food, putting packets together, doing the wash, passing out packets of information, and much more. These two women gave up everything just to help out with something that failed in the end. They didn’t know if their helping out would definitely make “the vote” able to happen, but they didn’t think about it that far. The only thing that they cared about was that they were helping, maybe in small ways but it didn’t matter. They went everyday for a week or so keeping secrets from Connor’s father knowing that if would find out they would be beaten. They didn’t care about the beating though, they cared about the cause and just wanted to help it be seen by others. When they awoke the next morning they had realized that they missed the first mass and went to Bertha’s home, which was where they were helping the suffragists. When they got there to help everyone dropped everything to help Nora with her face. Her eye was swollen shut and bruised badly. Nora and Connor had gone to the house that morning to help out and that was it but later they would find that the nice women would offer a room to them to stay in. Everything sort of went back to normal. And when the convention was over the men had voted against the movement and women would not have “the vote” this year. When everything was soon over Bertha offered the room to Connor and her mother permanently, she said that Nora could be a housekeeper there and that Connor could stay and they would send her to a young women school and a college if she wished. Connor and her mother agreed and walked with Susan B. Anthony to the station for her to
