Risk factors of multiple pregnancy

This paper will examine the risk factors of multiple pregnancy affecting childbearing and the neonate. Due to their prevalence, emphasis is made on twin pregnancies. In order to give consistency, the majority of statistics used in this paper are applicable to Scotland.

Owing to the numerous risks associated with multiple pregnancy, and word constraint, this paper is limited to the number of complications that can be detailed. However, the author will demonstrate that maternal and neonatal risks associated with twin pregnancies have been explored.

Throughout this paper evidence and theories will be applied to justify maternal and neonatal care supported by the use of critical analysis.

This paper will begin by examining the trend in twin births and will explore zygosity of twins and the maternal factors responsible for multiple conception. Following this, the diagnosis of multiple pregnancy is described. The psychological and physiological implications of a multiple pregnancy are then detailed.

An examination of the neonatal risk factors and management of them follows. Complications connected to the delivery of twins are discussed with particular reference to the diagnosis and management of respiratory distress syndrome.

Some of the many factors related to the conception of a twin pregnancy will now be explored.

Due to the success of assisted reproductive technology, the incidence of twin pregnancy is increasing. The diagnosis of zygosity and chorioncity of the fetuses at an early stage will allow for the planning and management of the pregnancy.

„h Race. Nigerian women are more likely to conceive twins than any other race. Asian women have the lowest twinning rate (Gall 1996, p3).

„h Maintain a safe level of blood oxygenation

These factors and maternal factors account for the 83% incidence of antenatal complications, as compared to 32% for singleton pregnancies (Kovacs et al 1989).
