Fashion 1900-1929

Fashion is more than just dressing up because otherwise your cold. It’s dressing up because you want to look nice, and look different than other people.

Before the twentieth century, there were dressing codes, witch made status, class and age signalled. If you didn’t wore the clothes you were supposed to wear, you got punished.

In 1907, you could see subtle changes, but in between 1908 and 1910, there was an significant redirection in fashion. Paris still remained the capital of fashion, but if an article from Paris was to expensive, you could just buy a copy of it.

There was a grow of ready-to-wear clothes in the twentieth century.

The creations were remarkable. They were decorated with breads, laces, fake flowers and ruches. A fashionably dressed woman had to wear various layers of underwear. They had maids to help them with getting dressed and undressed.

First, the chemise and drawers came, in fine white cotton, followed by the corset.

A corset is a shape-making piece of underwear, which made you look thin. Women complained about the discomfort of the corset, and also medical people were complaining about it, because of the physical damage the corset had on women bones and organs, but t


After the war, a lot of things changed in Europe. The industry and the economics went really bad, and there was a grow of unemployment. Especially the simple working man lost their jobs. In England, 10 % of the people were unemployed. The politics did their benefit from this. The nationalism grew, and became very popular. In Italy, Mussolini became very powerful, and in Germany, it was Hitler who had all the power.

But then, the first world war started. Designers had to join the army, and there was a short of material.

He used colours like pink, green, yellow, deep red, and brown. This was seen as new, because most women wore mauve, grey or blue.

Women had a striking fan with their evening gowns, and they preferred ostrich-feathers. The fan would express your womanliness, and you could pull other peoples attention with it, or hide your face in it.

At five o’clock, when tea was served, women wore their tea gowns. Tea gowns permitted women a few hours of relief from tight corsets. Tea gowns were long, flowing, and gave the body room to relax.

The number of working women increased significantly between 1900 and 1913, and a two piece costume with a blouse was the perfect solution for office war.

Women didn’t wore corsets anymore, but to look thin, they wore special underwear, to correct their figure.
