Changing Quebec

Ever since Canada was first discovered in 1867, it has been going through many ups and downs, which have lead to few times of contentment, but rather of torn ideas and conflict. One of the most well known places in Canada is its largest province, Quebec, which has been split over the decision to stay a part of Canada or become independent.

Quebec is the only French speaking “political entity” in North America, excluding the islands in the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. Recently, the people of Quebec have been split in their opinions of whether Quebec should stay a part of Canada or break away and become its own country. This province already has its own legal system and has power over its immigration, allowing it to bring in French- speaking people.

If Quebec leaves Canada, it will cause a split separating the provinces along the Atlantic Ocean from the rest of Canada. If Quebec successfully breaks away, British Colombia might also try to gain its independence. The premier, Lucien Bouchard held a referendum between 1998 and 1999 to “ensure Quebec enters the next millennium as a sovereign country.
