Quebec is the only French speaking “political entity” in North America, excluding the islands in the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. Recently, the people of Quebec have been split in their opinions of whether Quebec should stay a part of Canada or break away and become its own country. This province already has its own legal system and has power over its immigration, allowing it to bring in French- speaking people.

If Quebec leaves Canada, it will cause a split separating the provinces along the Atlantic Ocean from the rest of Canada. If Quebec successfully breaks away, British Colombia might also try to gain its independence. The premier, Lucien Bouchard held a referendum between 1998 and 1999 to “ensure Quebec enters the next millennium as a sovereign country.

In contrast to the reaction of the people in Quebec, 58 percent of the citizens in Montreal voted against independence. Collectively, these people feel that Montreal is hurting so bad that they could not go without the help of the Canadian government. “ Look at all the boarded up shops and restaurants downtown…we have never seen this before…You start wondering, how much worse can it get? We are on life support.” Many people, have left Quebec because many other places in Canada offer people better opportunities for jobs and a life. Quebec has strict language laws now, that have made it a requirement to have all signs and computer software, web sites, and films in French. Citizens of Quebec are also tired of political debates. They feel that they will never end, at least until the political leaders get the answers they want to hear. If Quebec separates, the premier, along with other political leader will do everything in their power to keep Montreal a part of Canada.
