The setting in the introduction immediately resembles present day with modern cars and occurrences, for instance a taxi service. The story is set in Verona and introduces the rivalry between the two houses with shots of riot, fire and shooting. At the beginning the camera positioning is brilliant, touring you as an audience around the setting of Verona with fast zooms and flash shots of the horrible civil wars of people being arrested and hurt.
The costume is different for the two houses, Motague and Capulet. The motague boys are casually dressed in open brightly coloured shirts supporting their playful and childish attitude. However the Capulets dress with more authority and power, suits and silk waistcoats are worn relating to their threatening role. Everyone even though the story is from Shakespearean times is dressed in modern day.
nimal, the characters have a healthy colouring, no drastic changes are needed. There are however tattoos which a couple of ‘The Boys’ have as a trade mark to their ‘House’.
From the opening of Romeo and Juliet it is difficult to classify what group the film falls into and what genre it most relates to. The introduction shows nothing of the romance, I would therefor call it an action thought the amount of bloodshed and violence it foresees from the montage editing. However a little later into the story it does proclaim elements of westerns, with the camera being focused on Tybalts cow-boy like boot along with western style movement, music and fighting.
