Albert Camus ~ Philosopher, Author, Playwright

During his short life, Albert Camus made a name for himself in three areas – as a philosopher, as an author, and as a playwright. Although he is best known for his work as an author, Camus has left behind some noteworthy works in philosophy and theatre. He used his literary and artistic abilities to express his views about the world in which he lived. Many of his works are still praised today and have inspired the thought processes of many people.

Camus was born on 7 November 1913 to Lucien and Catherine Camus in Mondovi, Algeria. Todd, at 4. Camus never got to know his father, as the elder Camus was drafted by the French army and called to serve in World War I in about mid-1914. Id., at 5. He was wounded in the Battle of the Marne, and died due to complications on 11 October 1914. Id., at 6. Poverty was the only lifestyle known by the Camuses, even though they were entitled to benefits as survivors of a French veteran. Id., at 7.

As a way to escape his home life, Camus became enthralled in his school work and athletics. Wyatt. He turned a bad situation into at least tolerable by being a good student, especially in French. He was in the top four in his class; he even earned a scholarship to attend high school

Continuing in his thought of producing trios of literature works to present specific concepts, Camus developed “The Three Revolts.” Part of the Revolts was his play, Les Justes (The Just or The Just Assassins). In Les Justes, Camus fictionalized the 1905 assassination of Russian Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovitch, the uncle of Tzar Nicholas II. Kaliayev, the assassin in the play, is seeking “justice” for the Russian people. Originally, this justice was to be achieved by Kaliayev throwing a bomb at the Grand Duke. He refused to commit the assassination, however, when he saw the Grand Duke was standing with his niece and nephew – two completely innocent children. On his third attempt at assassination, Kaliayev succeeds and is imprisoned. While in prison he is visited by the Grand Duchess who considers, in her compassion, sparing Kaliayev’s life. He, having accepted the consequences for his actions, refuses and tells her he would rather be put to death than be a murderer. The completion of The Three Revolts were the novel Le Peste (The Plague) and Camus’ collection of essays entitled L'Homme Révolté (The Rebel). Wyatt.

While searching for his niche in life, Camus wrote several critical essays and attempted, without much success, poetry. Todd, at 21, 22. Even though it was his desire to be an author, he was forced to take several unrelated jobs including work as a sales representative, an accountant, and a tax collector. Id., at 25, 16. He also started several books and finished many including The Stranger, The Plague, and The Fall. Wyatt.

Camus wrote two other plays, Le Malentendu (The Misunderstanding, also called Cross Purpose) and State of Siege. In Cross Purpose, Camus’ second play, a man travels the world for 20 years then returns home. Unbeknownst to the man, during his absence, his mother and sister have been using their positions as innkeepers for immoral and illegal purposes, they have been killing and robbing travelers in order to have enough money to one day move to the seashore. Being a proverbial Prodigal Son, the man is unable to put into words his true identity when he returns to the family. He decides to pose as a traveling stranger and stay in the end. In their usual course of action, the innkeepers cause the man’s demise. Later, however, they find out who he really was and suicides follow. Wyatt.

State of Siege, though not very successful, was based loosely on Camus’ novel The Plague. These works were about the bubonic plague in Oran, Algeria. Dr. Rieux, the main character, and his team of plague-fighters, battle the plague for the following ten months, until February 1941. The char
