The benefits of exercise are reported to include improvement of one’s blood pressure, the betterment of one’s general well being, and anything in between. Extensive studies have been conducted on the subject of exercise. However, the use of exercise as an important coping strategy had received little, if any attention. Two researchers by the names of Gerlach and Espelage decided to perform a research study to explore the possibility that exercise may be used as a coping strategy. o Exercise is a coping factor in and of itself o People who exercise strenuously tend to utilize a task-or avoidance-oriented coping style o Greater participation in exercise and task-oriented coping predict higher levels of life satisfacti
on, self-esteem, and positive affect with less associated depression and anxiety. The title of this article caught my eye; I have always though of exercise as a necessary, albeit often unpleasant, part of my life. To learn about this study and realize that exercise is also a coping method made me view the dreaded task with an increased level of awareness and satisfaction. I believe that many people also view exercise as just a means to an end, and do not realize the effective tool they have in aiding with coping.
