Japan in World War 2 : Aggressor or Victim?

I, as a Japan Defence Minister have decided to lead Japan further down in the road of expansion. As we all know that the Japan is modernizing at a fast rate ever since the Meiji Revolution. Indeed after the reforms that are taken during the Meiji Revolution, Japan has the environment for mass national mobilization and rapid modernization; as opposes to the slow crawl of other Asian countries.

After hearing much from my advisors, I have decided that a war will be most appropriate if Japan wants further expansion. But why do we need a war? As you know that Japan is an island nation. Because of its mountain terrains, lack of lowlands and plains, the cities have a very dense population. Except in the northern island of Hokkaido, all parts of Japan are still crammed with over 300 persons per square mile. With a fast modernizing Japan, it is inevitable that the population is going to sky- rocket and the space leakage is becoming a major challenge in everyday life. So I believe that by conquering other Asian countries we can have more room for residential and commercial purposes and the population will be spread to the lands of our Asian brothers. Hence with our people spread evenly in other lands, Asia will progress as one.

However by going to a war will have some implications about it.

By going into the war, we are able to create more job opportunities for those unemployed. The Zaibatsus are earning money if there is a war as they help to produce the weapons needed in the war by obtaining raw materials from overseas. When they produce these raw materials, they are creating new job opportunities for the commoners out there. And on the conquered lands, our people can work there and earn more money thus give a great boast to the Japan’s economy. The dispossessed Samurais will be hired by the Zaibatsus again to fight in the war and will lessen the burden of the country to take care after them. War will give us the land we need, the unlimited raw materials and a big market and it can certainly promise Japan a great leap in the economy.

Secondly, the war will bring in big fortunes for the Zaibatsus. When the war ends, the Zaibatsus will be rich and powerful and have the ability to cause an uprise. This is a serious threat to the Emperor’s throne. There may be much internal conflicts vying for the throne. If Japan is already having problems within itself, how will it concentrate if their conquered countries counter-attack?

Immigrant Act of 1924: Exclusion of Japanese

o, since the 1920s Great depression, Japan’s economy has not been improving. We have been depending heavily on foreign trade for our income and this depression has destroyed part of our US market which has provided with two fifth of our income. The Great Depression was on the heels of the devastating Kanto earthquake in 1923 and economic stagnation during the 1920s, which especially hurt farmers and workers in small shops. Workers work 18 hours a day and
