Government class community service essay

I did my community service at the Brooklyn Public Library in Park Slope.

When I first signed up for community service in the library I had never been there before.

So I was lost and didn’t know my way around the library. There were 3 other volunteers that worked in the library as well. They were very friendly and welcomed me to the library. The library also had just hired a new librarian and she was almost as new as me to the library. I volunteered under her supervision four hours a day for four days a week. The first few days she just assigned me to do little task like pick books up, and add new books to the display. She told me what holiday she wanted the display section to have and I had to look for the books then put them in the style she wanted. I didn’t like this task because it was very boring and required little effort. I often finished around one hour earlier then I needed to. During this time I would wait for a new task that the librarian had just spotted or I would watch the other volunteers do what ever was required of them. One week pasted with the same thing over and over until the librarian finally assigned me to do something else. She started to make me reorganize whole shelves of books. This made me angry be

A Public Policy issue I would like to bring up is the waste of books that got deleted from the data base. The reason I choose to discus this problem is because while volunteering in The Brooklyn Public Library the many of the books I deleted from the data base which is around 400 books went straight in the trash instead being sold for more profit for the library, or going into the RIFT program which provides free books for child. I think this is a big problem, because a lot of money is being wasted. The full time workers I met while volunteering all said they were not paid enough, well selling these deleted books may help solve that problem. Also if we give these deleted books to the RIFT programs then it would help the community instead of just wasting books. The library doesn’t even have to give it to the RIFT program they can donate it to any program or school which is what they should do. The conditions of these deleted books are usually used or semi-new, which may affect how well they sell but it well worth the try. When I volunteered for the library the did sell these deleted books but it was something around 5 out of 100 book actually went out to sell. Also if the clerks were lazy they would just put all of the deleted books in the trash. Some possible problems that may arise with the solutions to this public policy issue is the fact that library can only have so many books on shelf to sell. I mean when I deleted around 200 books a day there was literally no space to put them anywhere. As for donating the books to organizations that give free books to the community I see no problem with doing this. The only reason I believe this is not done is because there is no job for it. There is no job to keep organized where the books go and which organization gets them. I believe this public policy issue can be resolved if the mentions solutions were applied.
