What ideas and images come to mind when thinking about a teacher? Almost everyone would share common images of someone working in school classroom which is decorated with the alphabet, maps and artwork. Then there are a few children who use their vivid imaginations to describe who and what they see a teacher as. My cousin Patrick, being one of those few, went to school one day and told his educator that he had a better teacher, but this teacher was in his family. His educator just assumed that one of his family members was a teacher and did not put much thought into it. Little did she know that he was referring to me, his 12 year old cousin at the time. Patrick’s reference to me as a teacher seemed odd at the time, but stuck with me through all these years and had a huge impact on my decision to become a teacher.
I was the first born on both sides of the families and hate
My teaching and learning process started off slow with Patrick. Being taught a new and difficult task can be very frustrating to the student and the teacher. We started with the simple game of hopscotch. Patrick learned that almost too quickly. Next we tackled how to ride a two wheeler bicycle. This on the other hand was not as easy. After many crashes, falls, cries, scrapes to his body and my encouragement, he was able to pick up the tactic of riding a two wheeler in a short period of time. Shortly after Patrick was riding his bike, swimming and wanting to play outside until the sunset. Patrick was extremely proud of himself and his accomplishments. Every night he would proudly tell his mother what new activity he did that day and was eager to perform them for her.
