The world has recognized refugees’ rights in several cases. The United Nations as well has helped refugees throughout history. One case is helping Afghan refugees from twenty years of war and devastation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. “In 2002, almost 1.8 million Afghans returned to their homeland from Iran, Pakistan and the Central Asian Republics. They were assisted by UNHCR, the Afghan Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation, and the governments of the neighboring countries.” (“Return” UNHCR). The United Nation has a policy of having refugees return to their homelands as well. Another program that has helped refugees in the past is the International Rescue Committee. They have helped Kashmir refugees being a constant rivalry between India and Pakistan. The American Refugee Center has had many programs helping refugees all over the world.

Resolves that the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted

to make their assistance in creating a peace process to help the fighting and allow the Palestinians to return to their homeland.

The Israelis have rejected their right to return though and opposed basing any negotiations on the principles of the General Assembly Resolution 194. There are many other solutions that have been brought up as well, but haven’t taken effect due to opposing view points. On March 22, 2000, Pope John Paul II visited the Deheisheh camp, a Palestinian refugee camp. He stated that “Only a resolute commitment on the part of the leaders of the Middle East, and of the international community in general, can solve the causes of your current situation." Even though it is the biggest refugee disaster, it is still unsolved.
