Playboy of the Western World-Review

The Playboy of the Western World: Response

Taking the stage are the actors and actresses who have rehearsed repeatedly to perfect the scripts that have been presented to them. Almost two hours of performance is put out by confident actors to an intrigued audience. Though many plays are looked at solely for their entertainment value, they can also be looked at through what the actors as individuals contributed to the play. With this play, The Playboy of the Western World, containing 16 actors and actresses, there were many contributions from the actors to analyze.

I would be dishonest if I didn’t admit that only a few actors and actresses jumped out at me as adding a “special something” to the play. It is almost obvious from the beginning of a play to tell who is appropriate for a part and who doesn’t fit their role. I feel that all of the actors/actresses fit their roles, but only Christy, Margaret and Widow were overly effective.

Christy Mahon, played by Fred Quillin, fit this role physically. To me, a person who would kill his father is fierce and big. From my view in the audience, Christy appeared to be about five-foot tall and about 25 years old. Even though this didn’t fit my mental picture of wh

Overall, despite the audible problems, I felt that the actors and actresses worked well together on stage. It was almost as though they fed off of each other’s emotions causing the dialogue to flow. At times when emotions ran high with envy, the characters would display more deceit. When emotions ran high with anger, the characters would display more fierceness. Even though I am not a performance critic, I feel that this is a good chemistry to have between a cast. When you have actors and actresses that can work off of others performances and emotions, then you are almost guaranteed to have a successful product.

In conclusion, a play can be made better by focusing on what the actors and actresses individually contribute to the play. Even though some characters weren’t as audible as others, those characters added to other aspects of the play. Those characters that were audible lacked in other areas. The point here is that each character added to another and when putting together all the things that were individually contributed, the end product was a success.

The character that was most audible and understandable was Michaels James Flaherty, played by Ben Cole. Though his character in the play wasn‘t my particular favorite, he was at least clear. At the end of act three, he wants Shawn to fight Christy. Throughout this whole scene, he is very loud and forceful with these two men. Even at one point, he pushes Shawn and says, “Go on you fool and fight him now.” This was important for the character because in the situation he needed to be heard and show emotion, which is exactly what he did. This definitely added to his character and gave the audience a lasting impression.

Margaret Flaherty, called Pegeen Mike, who wa
