LAPD
Many people wish to live in a community where crime does not exist. Unfortunately, many people live in a community where crime is a big problem. Crimes that occur in a community can not be solved by the people living there. Crime in a community must be solved and regulated by the police. The Los Angeles police department has had a difficult time regulating and stopping many problems that occur in the communities. The Los Angeles police department has had a troubled history, from pervasive corruption of the 1930s and 1940s, to the bitter feelings of the city’s minority communities toward former chief Daryl Gates’ department, culminating in the uproar over the 1991 beating of Rodney King. The Los Angeles police department current troubles are the Rampart scandals that have taken police misconduct to a new level of lawlessness and given currency to a new term: The Gagster Cop. The department has its flaws, but by trying to get rid of their gangster cop image, the police will also change some of their flaws. The main problem to fix first is supervision. When gangster cop image is destroyed people will trust the police and will not fear them. The communities in which we live in will improve tremendously. The people in Los Angeles need the police to get rid of gangs, drugs, and crime. The Rampart division is among the worse police divisions in the city. Rampart is Los Angeles’ most populated district: 375,00 people. The area has thirty gangs packed into eight square miles (Riverdale 23). Due to the gang violence the Rampart Division formed a program to monitor and regulate gang activity. Unfortunately officers systematically planned evidence and then lied in court (Riverdale 23). In a series of trials, three Rampart officers were found guilty of conspiracy to obstruct justice by planting evidence and framing gang members (Walker 13). After finding the officers guilty an investigation was brought up and due to the bad policing 100 Rampart related convictions have
