A Bystander In Salem

In the play The Crucible, there are many character that shows some sign of sympathy, but in order for the reader to really see why the character is sympathetic, the character has to demonstarte his/her external and internal conflicts within himself/herself. The conflicts within the society and his/her emotions, helps the reader get more invovled and feels more sympathy about that character. The most sympathethic character in the play is Abigial Williams.

Abigail Williams is a 18 year old girl who becomes an orphan, when her parents were killed by Indians right in front of her eyes. She then comes to live with her uncle, Rev. Parris, who does not have any interest in children, or talent with them. Although he has one of his own, Betty . Abigial is hoping for that flame to spark in John’s heart, so she can have that love that she once knew. She states in her conversation with John “I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then and you do now!” (23)

All the anger that is building up in her, with the jealousy of Elizabeth and her fantasy that if she could only dispose of Elizabeth, John would be hers. Also when she states to John, "…..I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men!"(25). Which shows that Abigail hates Salem because of what John has taught her, eveything that she was taught by the Christian women she now sees is fake, and in that course, she will makes Salem pay. Her anger and evilness towards Salem is only because of the therocratic nature of their society, the moral laws that states: sin and the status of an individual's soul are matters of public concern. Which means, that because of Salem and their laws, it affects Abigail and John's past relationship. It clearl
