Prohitbition

Prohibition in the United States was a measure designed to reduce drinking by eliminating the businesses that manufactured, distributed, and sold alcoholic beverages. The prohibition movement started growing after the formation of the anti-saloon league in 1893. The prohibition leaders believed that once license to do business was removed from the liquor traffic, the churches and reform organizations would enjoy an opportunity to persuade Americans to give up drink. Some prohibition leaders looked forward to an educational campaign that would greatly expand once the drink businesses became illegal. Other prohibition leaders looked forward to vigorous enforcement of prohibition in order to eliminate supplies of beverage alcohol. By 1916, no less than 23 of the 48 states had adopted anti-saloon laws, which in those states closed the saloons and prohibited the manufacture of any alcoholic

beverages. Also, when the national elections of that year returned a U.S. Congress in which the anti-saloon league members outnumbered the people who were against Prohibition. From all the evidences, the prohibition was really thought out thoroughly beforehand. There were laws and prohibition leaders trying to enforce the prohibition, by enforcing those laws, the alcohol selling was decreasing drastically during that period.

Women were the most important factor that the prohibition became the law and enforcing in many states. The anti-saloon league was the largest organization that wanted prohibition; the anti-saloon league was mainly a women organization. By 1900, millions of men and women were beginning to share this hostility toward the saloon and to regard it as the most dangerous social institution then threatening the family.
