The Woman Behind the Mask

In Henry James’ “The Aspern Papers” the only real character who particularly drew my interest from the beginning of the novel was Juliana Bordereau. She is a woman whose entire person (body, mind, and spirit) is kept under full control for the duration of the novel. Juliana is the strongest character in the story, as she takes control over the other characters in the story. Juliana’s presence is very strong throughout the novel even though she has underlying intentions.

Juliana “lived now in Venice in obscurity, on very small means, unvisited, unapproachable, in a dilapidated old palace on an out-of-the-way canal” (James 1) where she was isolated from the world. The setting is important as it is supposed to keep Juliana away from greedy people who can’t get to her and her prized papers, the prized papers being those of Jeffery Aspern, a deceased poet.

The relationship of Juliana and Jeffrey put her at an advantage, but at the same time also put her in a continuous battle against lies and distrust. She had a

relationship with him many years back and is now in ownership of his papers that the narrator coverts. Juliana represents the past, of how it was beautiful, and now the

The struggle between the narrator and Juliana, and the control of Juliana over Miss Tina, are the key elements of The Aspern Papers. The strong character of Juliana, her mysterious motives and secretive lifestyle is what carries the story throughout. It’s a matter of opinion if the character of Juliana is good or evil, but it doesn’t really matter as her presence and actions are felt so profoundly.

After years of constantly fighting people off the narrator finally came close in defeating her, and as the life was taken out of her, “she fell back with a quick spasm, as if death had descended on her, into Miss Tina’s arms” (James 79). Shortly after the narrator’s actions Juliana’s downfall followed, but she still maintained her control and power. Miss Tina went on to burn the papers, destroying the narrator’s efforts to get hold of the prized papers. Even though Juliana was dead, the mystery behind her was still unknown. Since the papers were destroyed, Juliana did succeed in beating the narrator even though in the end she was the one who had been physically defeated herself.

sadness of watching it rot away as her emotions have fallen off with the passing years. Juliana’s interaction with the two other main characters, the narrator and Miss Tina, are an attempt to reveal her true self, but that won’t be fully seen until she is an old woman, near her death.

Despite Juliana’s control over Miss Tina, her reclusive lifestyle, and her silence about her relationship with Aspern, her whole facade is really the key to her mysterious appearance. “She had over her eyes a horrible green shade which served for her almost as a mask…at the same time it created a presumption of some ghastly death’s-head lur
