Choose Life

For over a century now abortion has been a very controversial topic. The first time this topic became a legal issue was in the 1960’s when pro-choice advocates pushed for the legalization of abortion. Abortion is not only physically and mentally damaging but is morally wrong as well. The legalization of abortion should never have been an option and should be outlawed today.

What exactly is an abortion you may be asking? An abortion is the termination of pregnancy that can either be spontaneous or induced. Spontaneous abortions are often called miscarriages. Abortions induced artificially end the pregnancy and, depending on how far the pregnancy has advanced, determines the method used (). Now many would say a woman has a choice of whether or not to keep the baby and not giving her that choice violates hers rights and privacy. What about the rights of the child? The killing of the unborn child violates the Fourteenth Amendment, which says that no state shall deprive any person of life. What exactly is life? Webster’s defines life as a period of existence (Kidney 151). When exactly does a baby come into existence and become human? A baby is human from the m

Its amazing that our society allows the killing of a child in such sickening ways as salt poisoning and dismembering of body parts and there is no punishment for it. There is even a law against cruelty to animals. If a person was to beat and starve a dog or any other type of animal you bet he would be thrown in jail or at least face some type of consequences. But let a mother who made a mistake one night and doesn’t want to live with what she has done kill an unwanted child and we call that freedom of choice. The legalization of abortions was supposed to reduce child abuse, since it was assumed that most abused children were unwanted at birth. But this theory has been disproven by scientific studies as well as evidence that child abuse has sharply increased since abortion became legal. In 1973 when abortion became legal in the United States, there were 167,000 cases of child abuse and neglect reported. Yet in 1980 there were 785,100 cases an increase of 370% since 1973. Furthermore in 1987 there were 2,025,200 cases reported which represents an increase of 1112% (). Not only did legalizing abortions not decrease child abuse but it increased it to an all time high.

Its still amazing how our society tolerates abortions no matter what the age of the individual may be, but your child can not even get their ears pieced or receive aspirin from the school nurse without your consent. President Bush even agrees that “our society has a responsibility to defend the imperfect and unwanted; and that our nation should set a great goal that unborn children should be welcomed into life and protected in law ().” Simply because an act is illegal and you would like to partake in it does not mean that your privacy is violated. Abortion is murder and the emot
