Questions about DNA lead me to my next topic, cloning. “Do you know how to clone?” Her response was “I learned the procedure that was used to clone DNA and the famous sheep, Dolly, but have not personally cloned anything yet.” “Dolly is a great example, but how was she created?” “It was an excruciating3 process, but here it is in laymen terms. A cell is taken from the downer female. An unfertilized egg is taken from a second female. The DNA from the cell is removed and transferred to the egg. The egg is implanted into a surrogate mother. The resulting baby is genetically identical to the original donor.” A clone is not an exact replica of the original, but just a much younger identical twin. The reason I asked this question is because cloning is a very important part of stem cell research. “What kind of work is out there for a Genetics graduate?” The response given “There is a world of opportunities in the medical field working with human DNA as well as animals and plants.” While researching, I found a few jobs that Leslie, if interested, would be able to apply for upon graduation.
