And Then There Was None

Ten strangers travel to Indian Island due to a letter they all receive. The letters were sent by Mr. Owen. He claims to know them, but they don’t know him.

When the guests arrive they find the nursery rhyme Ten Indian boys and ten Indian figures. A gramophone plays that reveals their secrets of murder. They are all accidents, exempt of Lombard. They decide there is no Mr. Owen.

As a storm grows, people would die. As they died, the Indian figures disappeared.

It turns out Wargrave was Mr. Owen. The guests died in the ways the Indian boys died.

A. Mutter[ed] - To utter or speak indistinctly or in a low voice.

B. I think that the author used the word mutter because the person speaking is thinking out loud and in the passage he is sitting across form another person, and probably doesn’t want to be heard. Although, he may just speak softly while thinking out loud, because some people do that.
