Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to “Go get some water/ And wash this filthy witness from your hand…/Go, carry [the daggers] and smear/ the sleepy grooms with blood” (2.2 60-64). The filthy witness upon Macbeth’s hands is the blood itself. With blood on his hands, it is evidence that he was the killer. Therefore, Lady Macbeth has him wash his hands to get rid of the evidence. In addition, Lady Macbeth wants to frame the guards, so the blame will not be placed in them. With a scapegoat, these two evil people can proceed on with their lives, as if they had noting to do with the deaths. Moreover, blood shows a common parallel between the heavens and earth due to the furious acts of all the characters. Ross says to the old man that “Thou seest the heavens, as troubled with man’s act,/ Threatens his bloody stage” (2.4 7-8). The bloody stage is being compared to the earth and reality. In essence, their lives are a play and they are merely the characters (haha paradox). Along with that, after Macbeth hires men to kill Banquo, his ghost returns, haunting Macbeth.
