Macbeth plot summary


            There are four important characters in the play Macbeth, Macbeth himself, Kind Duncan of Scotland, Ms Macbeth (Macbeths Wife) and Banquo who is Macbeths comrade. Macbeth and Banquo are generals of Scotland who just defeated a revolt against King Duncan. However on their way back after the final battle three witches appear out of a storm and tell a prophecy that he will be Thane of Glamis and also Thane of Cawdor and later king of Scotland. Later on Duncan orders the death of Thane of Cawdor and Macbeth starts to believe he can force the witches prophecy. However the witches also told Banquo that his sons would be kings. Macbeth assassins King Duncan and his sons flee. Macbeth is anointed king. But Macbeths is afraid of Banquos sons, they were after all rule as kings some day. So Macbeth orders the death of Banquo. Later on when he is having dinner with his friends he openly complains that Banquo can't join them, however at Banquo's empty seat he see's Banquo's bloody ghost, none of the other guests can see it though. Macbeth panicks. Macbeth meets with the three witches. They warn him to beware of Macduff, the Thane of Fife. He is disloyal to Macbeth. The witches also assure him that he is safe until Birnam wood moves to Dunsinane and that no man born of woman will ever be able to harm him. .
             Macbeth then learns that Macduff has fled Scotland and gone to England. Macbeth storms the castle of Macduff and orders the killing of Macduff's wife and children. After this Ms Macbeths goes over from fear to guilt witch is an intersting change, we will analyze that further on. When he is told that his wife has died, he does not seem to care. Life seems to signify nothing for him. Later he is told, that Macduff and Malcolm are invading Dunsinane. They are camouflaged by branches from trees from Birnam Wood.
             Macbeth is worried about this, because of what the witches had told him, but his worry does not last long.
