Early radio Walter Kersting

When early radio started out in the early 1900’s, people were amazed at the fact that sound can travel through the air and be picked up by an apparatus. The radio used to be a balky looking box with exposed vacuum tubes and coils. Although it was still magical for people in the early 1900’s to hear sound get picked out of the air, the quality was horrible due to weak signals, the radio was unreliable, extremely expensive and the future for commercial applications seemed distant. Walter Kersting of Germany changed all that sooner than expected. Kersting created a radio that was reliable, modern looking and affordable. Kersting radio was so well built that even Adolf Hitler used it to his power for Nazi political broadcasts. To this day the basic radio still follows the look of Kersting’s. That is way Walter Kersting is a pioneer of early radio.

In the early 1920’s the radio started being sold to the public. It was built very poorly and had the look of a scientific ap


paratus. The radio wasn’t easy to operate due to the abundance of controls. Wires, tubes and coils were exposed which caused the radio to have no attractive modern look to it. The look that people wanted for the 1920’s was solid handcrafted wood, that can fit in nicely and look like furniture at home. Sooner than expected the radio was being built as a handcrafted piece of art. Even though it was still the 1920’s the radio went though two major change. It had a nice look and signals became more reliable and stronger. Commercial interests also began to notice that the radio was a mass medium for advertising and entertainment. The only problem was that since the radio was handcrafted and large in size it was expensive!!! Only the upper class could afford it, thus a large chunk of the public was left stranded with no access to the radio.
