Chesapeake and New England Lifestyles
Were the colonies set in the “New World” supposed to be identical to each other since they all had the same origin, England? Somewhere along the line they decided to pick up their own lifestyles. Thus, the colonies then each formed similarities and differences. Particularly, the New England colonies in the “New World” had some very different and similar lifestyles to the colonies just south of them, the Chesapeake colonies. It is amazing how two regions so close can evolve into two very different societies. Differences in the colonies of both regions included the age range of their immigrated people, the conditions of their region, the influence of religious beliefs on their lifestyles, the economies developed in the regions, and nonetheless, a similarity shared by both regions involved conflicts with their neighboring Native Americans. Last The age range of the migrant people arriving into the two colonies fluctuated drastically. The colonists of New England had wider age range than the Chesapeake colonies because of many reasons. One reason was the fact that more women went to the New England colonies than the Chesapeake colonies. The reason for this and behind the immigration difference between the two regio

They took their religion very seriously and with the exception of Rhode Island, they practiced the Congregational Church, which was tax-supported. Rhode Island was tolerant of most religions. Mostly Puritans, who were people who wanted to purify the Church of England, were in control of the governments. Church membership was required to vote in the colonies’ elections. The government also taxed households to build meetinghouses and to pay for ministers’ salaries. The colonies’ laws were based from the Old Testament scriptures and enforced strict moral codes of conduct. However, the Chesapeake colonies’ religious behavior was much opposed to those of the New England colonies. Unlike the New England colonies, the Chesapeake colonies had no religious motives or intentions when migrating to the New World, with the exception of Maryland. Maryland practiced Catholicism and tolerated anyone Christian. Instead, their goal was clearly hoping to gain riches. Henceforth, religion did not play an important factor in the daily lives of the colonists. In the Chesapeake area, religion, although a strong part of life in New England, only played a role in the colony of Maryland in which Catholicism was not persecuted as it was in England. There were many conflicts occurring between the Native Americans and both the New England and Chesapeake colonies. These were caused by similar reasons in both regions. The different cultures led to serious misunderstand
