Adversity in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
“A state of hardship or affliction; misfortune” is the definition of adversity. Through out the novel I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings written by Maya Angelou, many characters suffered by adversity. Adversity has been incorporated through out this in many different situations; some are worse then others. There are three characters that are suffering by adversity are Maya, Bailey and Uncle Willie. Who were all African-American. They are the characters who suffer the most. One of the characters who suffers by adversity is Maya. Maya, along with her brother, were shipped down to the south to Stamps, Arkansas to live with their paternal grandmother, whom they called Momma. When she figures out that their parents are still alive she felt the adversity of being abandon. For example when she says, “Why did they send us away? What did we do that was so wrong?” (43). She says this because she was confused and angry. She overcomes this adversity by accepting the fact and learning it is during hard times for her mother and father, when she is sent away. Uncle Willie is another character who has suffers by adversity. He suffers by adversity when the Klu Klux Klan is on one of their raids and since Uncle Willie is a black man he has to hide. An example is when Mr. Steward came riding on his horse and says to Momma, “Annie, tell Willie he better lay low tonight. A crazy nigger messed with a white lady today. Some of the boys’ll becoming over here later.” (14). Mr. Steward warns Momma about it because he does not want Willie getting hung. Uncle Willie copes and overcomes this adversity by just dealing with it and trying not to bother anybody else with his problems. Another adversity Uncle Willie suffers by is his problems. He is crippled and he has a stutter, he is always made fun of. For example when Maya says, “…Uncle Willie, with his starched shirts, shined shoes and shelved full of food, was the whipping boy and the butt of jokes of the under employed and the under paid. Fate not only disabled him but laid a double-tiered barrier in his path.” (9). He copes with this adversity by having pride in himself and he does not let other people get to him when they tease him about being crippled and having a stutter.
