What were the main issues of disagreement between the Britis
The English had colonised America from the 17th and 18th century. As they did this they began to rape the raw materials of the country, plunder the wealth and tax the local population. For what was the purpose of colonising a country then not to gain money from that colonised country? The British considered America to be their sovereign state and it is this attitude that the British had throughout the bitter fighting that took place in the French and Indian war. They believed it was their sovereign right to control and tax this country. The Americans on the other hand had other ideas. They wished to develop their own government, their own diplomacy, their own country! Throughout this essay I will discuss the disagreements between the colonies and the brittish government. The British had fought the French and the Indians for seven long years but by the end of it the French had been expelled from North America. But with the French gone the Americans began to develop their own ambitions. Their thoughts began to develop of beating the English and thus the ability to set up a country and economy. British politics are important to comprehend if we are to begin to understand the complex disagreements between the colonists and the
British. As the parliament passed the laws which precipitated the war of independence the Whigs had successfully eliminated the Tories from parliament. The king even now reported himself as being a Whig! Although some Whigs did seem to support the colonists. They were but a small majority and they were referred to as the ‘old Whig’. But they were only a small majority and so not strong enough to stop the tax. But this does prove that not all Englishmen sided with taxing the Americans which is seen as the main cause of the war of independence. In 1765 the parliament again passed another law which was again to make the colonists to pay for stationing the troops. The quartering act was a law where by the citizens would provided the essentials to the army (beer, candles, living quarters) although this law was obeyed it was really only obeyed half heartedly and the colonies never really gave them everything they really wanted. The stamp act was the act that really infuriated the colonists. This act placed a tax on the legal documents that colonists would use. But not only was in it legal documents but also newspapers playing cards and diplomas. These were everyday items and so as a consequence the colonists revolted against this act. Riots were common place and destruction of property was recorded. In the summer a shoemaker led a riot in destroying the house of a rich merchant named Andrew Oliver. They smashed up his house and drank the wine from his wine cellars! The people resented the tax which was seen as being extremely burdensome especially on the poor.
