Methods of American Education vs. Asian Education The American Education system has been a topic of concern for many of American peoples of today’s society that stresses competition with Asia’s methods of education is slim; America is “A Nation at Risk.” (Pg. 197) Most may not know much about Asian methods of education, but as American’s we have gained a great deal of experience from the American system of education. There are many appealing elements of controversy surrounding this topic, of these, a few play an important role, such as parental involvement, the school system in general, and individual attention of students. These two countries have obvious cultural differences surrounding the methods used in each school system, which in turn asks the question: “Is the American system of education in serious need of some kind of reform?” Parental involvement plays the most important role in how the American system and Asian system of education plays out. Individual attention is important in American education, but it is irrelevant in the Asian system of education. James Fallows states “Japan’s teachers, policemen, politicians, and business managers willingly point out that their society is relatively easy to run because ‘We are all Japanese.’ Today’s Japanese population includes people whose ancestors came from Mongolia and Polynesia; there are also several distinct minority groups. But for more than a century, political leaders and intellectuals have promoted the idea that to be a Japanese citizen is to be part of one pure race, separate from any other, and automatically bound together.” (Pg. 205) Kie Ho believes that we as Americans should embrace our children’s freedom to think. She states “Public schools provide children with opportunity and direction to fulfill their creativity, something that people tend to dismiss or take for granted.” (Pg. 203) She asks “Would we prefer to stuff the developing little heads of our children with hundreds of geometry problems, the manes of rivers in Brazil, and 50 lines from the Canterbury Tales?
