The Psychological Effects Of Abortion

"Making the decision to terminate pregnancy or bring an unwanted fetus to term is by far the most wrenching experience to be had. The right to choose is not a luxury; it is a responsibility that demands intense introspection and awareness"(Herman, 1992). Abortion is the spontaneous or induced termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus. Whether or not a woman should have the choice of abortion is an incredibly controversial topic in today's society. An even more controversial issue today, is whether or not an abortion causes psychological effects in the women who receive them. Many people are interested in learning about the possible effects of abortion on a woman's well-being. Several hundred studies have been done on this topic since the late 1970's. Groups opposed to abortion have attempted to document the existence of “post abortion syndrome” or PAS. These groups claim the syndrome has traits similar to “post traumatic stress disorder” or PTSD, demonstrated by some war veterans. Anti-abortionists’ claims of PAS hope that terms like these gain credibility and become more widespread. Reports say that studies with “the most scienti

fically rigorous research designs” consistently found no trace of this so-called “post abortion syndrome”. The American Medical Association agrees that no such syndrome is scientifically or medically recognized. TV ads in various parts of the US, put on by crisis pregnancy centers offer “Post Abortion Syndrome Counseling.” These centers are not offering a genuine, needed service. They are attempting to create a FALSE belief among the public that such a syndrome, PAS, is common. The psychological effects of legally induced abortion are mostly positive. Negative effects occur only in women who were emotionally disturbed before the abortion, and were rare and less frequent in women who carried their unwanted pregnancy to term.

A small minority of women have reported severe negative emotional effects after an abortion. The point of this paper is not to say it doesn’t happen but it is very rare. The so-called “Post Abortion Syndrome” does not exist. The fact is that anti-abortion groups have invented the condition to further their cause. The statistics are astounding; 98 percent of women who have had abortions had no regrets, no negative psychological effects, and would make the choice again in similar circumstances. When these negative effects do show up, it is usually the experience of an unwanted pregnancy, not the abortion itself, that may cause them. In 1989. a panel of experts assembled by the American Psychological Association concluded that legally induced abortion “does n
