The Wheel of time series of books are now at 11 volumes, with each installment containing no less than 500 pages (Barnes & Noble Online). A massive universe of characters and lands has provided a rich tapestry for the imagination of Fantasy and Science fiction fans around the world (Patterson). Each Time a new Volume is released it goes immediately to the top of the New York Times best sellers list and is now among the best selling Fantasy novel series ever (Jordan). The Future of this bestselling series however is in doubt because of the past five years in which only 2 books have been released. Robert Jordan’s Wheel of time novels have become more imposing to new readers, slower in pace and more verbose over the Past Five years. The Wheel of time Universe like many other fantasy novels is populated by young men and women of humble origins who come to fore front of world events. The world that the Wheel of time characters inhabits is very similar to that of 18th century Europe without gunpowder or transoceanic empires. The other major feature of the world is a system of “Magic”
The Main Characters of the Books are Rand Althor, Perrin Aybara, Mat Cauthon, and Egwene Alvere. The charters find love and adventure in their journey as well as danger. The Characters have also come a long way from their beginning and are on their way to even greater thing. The Books characters are also rich in detail and that is part of the problem. The Market for new fans for the series may seem very bright with the Lord of the Rings trilogy coming into theatres (Lordofthering.net). Another good sign is the Harry Potter series enormous sales. The publisher Tor recently reissued the First book in the wheel of time series with the beginning reworked to be more kid friendly (Tor). The size of the book themselves as well as the number of books can be compared to Harry Potter but that’s it.
