DSS

Millions of new cars are sold every year in the United States. American consumers love the variety of automobiles they can choose from, but this can also be a problem. For the average new car buyer, the number of choices can be overwhelming. How do you choose between getting a Honda Civic or a Ford Focus? What about between a Dodge Durango and a Buick Rendezvous? What will you base your choice on? This question also has a multitude of options.

For an expert, characteristics like engine size, cargo volume, and fuel capacity can help narrow down and eventually help to pick an automobile. But most people do not know nor do they care about the differences between cars in these specifications. For most consumers, it doesn’t matter what the exact size of the trunk is, as long as it is large enough to carry the groceries. Many consumers will end up asking friends for recommendations on their new car purchase, but recommendations can only help to a certain point. There is always the option of going to different dealers and getting their recommendations as well, but dealers will almost always recommend the cars they are selling. So an outside perspective from a knowledgeable source is the best bet when trying to b

The decision making process is a difficult one. It would make life easier if all problems were highly structured and an optimal solution was known. But life is not that simple. The problem of choosing a new car to purchase is a semi-structured problem, which allows a decision support system, such as ours, to aid a user in his/her final decision. It does not simply give the best solution, but it gives a range of alternatives using the information available, leaving the final decision making to the user. The problem is also a form of management control, meaning user wants to obtain the best vehicle according to his/her preferences, within a suitable price range.

Our system uses a mathematical model in Excel to come up with results. The model has three basic components: the decision variables are the preferences of the user. For example, the cost of the car is a decision variable. The uncontrollable parameters in our model include the number of doors on the vehicles and the class of the vehicle. The result variables are the outputs. This normative model gives results that are the best possible given all possible alternatives. So out of the 532 car listed, our outputs are the optimal choices. The process of optimization is used to get the smallest difference between user variables and the uncontrollable parameters of our model to get the result.
