Gensis 15
The following will try to come to an informal understand of Genesis 15 by examining the text in a verse-by-verse. The chapter is written in two major sections the promise of the descendents (vv. 1-6) and the concerns the promise of a homeland (vv. 7-22). There are two main character in this chapter God and Abram. I believe that the setting of this chapter is in the Promise Land. I believe this because he says that this is the land that the Israelites will get when they are released from bondage. From what I know there is the Promise Land that they receive after several hundred years of waiting. Most of this chapter is about God’s covenant with Abram and how it is going to be fulfilled and how it has started to get to the point of fulfillment. Here, God test; the faith of Abram and asks his to perform a sacrifice. Verse 1 begins with “After these things…” This shows that some time has passed since the last chapter. “These things” could mean what has happened in the previous chapter. Some of the things that happened are Abrams blind faith in God. Even when all else failed he believed in God that he would make things the best and all things are possible because of him. Another is God promised Abram certai
Reading on not it is getting dark and Abram is sleeping. What is a dreadful darkness that is mentioned in verse 12? This could mean that it is getting dark outside or also that there is some kind of bad thing going on in the area. Since in verse 5 God and Abram were looking at the stars wasn’t it already dark then. Here in verse 13 I believe that God is talking about how many years that they Israelites will be enslaved in Egypt. Which is seen later in the book of Exodus that they (Israelites) where in Egypt working as slaves for about 400 years working as slaves for the people such as Pharaoh. At least it is a round number or about the amount of time. Does this mean each generation is one hundred years? People lived long than we do now so I believe that can be a fair assumption. In verse 16 it says that the forth generation will make it back to where they are now talking. This is where the covenant will get fulfilled. The promises of land are elaborated in verses 13-16 parallel to the promise of numerous decedents in verse 5. This shows that Abram will be an agent to deliver the Israelites to God. When reading though verse 8 I believe that Abram is asking the Lord for a sign that he will be inheritor of land. In verse 9 we see God telling Abram to bring specific things to him. I believe that this is testing his faith. After Abram gets all these things in verse 11 we see him cut them all in half all accept the bird. Why did the bird not get cut? This could be that the bird was to small to small to cut so they just offered it as is was. Why do the animals have to be three years old? This could be a significant number in some way. I am not totally sure but that is what I am gathering for the reading that I have done. What is the purpose the end of verse 11? This could be a way of showing how faithful Abram is to God. God could be testing him to see in he would protect what he was offering to him (God). n things and we see though out the book of Genesis and Exodus that they start to get fulfilled even if it not in his life time they get put into place just like God said they would. The phrase “The word of the Lord came,” is common in the prophets. This shows here that Abram has special status with the Lord. Abram gets the word for the Lord in a vision, which also shows his prophetic. It says, “I am your shield” this means that the Lord is going to protect him; that the Lord is Abram’s King. You also see this in Psalms 5:12 “… You surround them with favor as with a shield” this is saying that when you have God with you he is going to protect you with his powers that you don’t have to worry about the small things because God is always on your
