Raging Bull

And for years they’ll remain in my thoughts

I recall every fall, every hook, every jab

The worst way a guy could get rid of his flab

“A Horse, a Horse, my Kingdom for a Horse,”

I haven’t had a winner in six months

In “Raging Bull”, Martin Scorsese’s personal approach to filmmaking is taken to a whole new level. Shooting in a crisp black and white, Scorsese tells the story of middleweight boxer Jake La Motta, played with impressive emotion by Robert De Niro. As La Motta rises through the ranks to earn his first shot at the middleweight crown, he falls in love with Vickie (Cathy Moriarty), a gorgeous girl from his Bronx neighborhood whom he ends up marrying. Jake’s inability to express

The most effective cinematography in the film is the use of slow motion to suggest a heightened awareness. Just as ``Taxi Driver's'' Travis Bickle saw the sidewalks of New York in slow motion, so La Motta sees Vickie so intently that time seems to expand around her. Normal movement is shot at 24 frames a second; slow motion uses more frames per second, so that it takes longer for them to be projected; Scorsese uses subtle speeds such as 30 or 36 frames per second, and we internalize the tool so that we feel the tension of narrowed eyes and swelling anger when Jake is triggered by mistrust over Vickie's behavior. Also, it wasn’t smoke surrounding the ring in the opening scene of the film when La Motta is dancing around the ring almost godlike, it was actually a small machine that created mist that looked like smoke.

The sound effects were very subtle. They fit so well with the movie the first time you watch it you don’t even notice them. He uses a variety of noises for when a punch has connected, he uses flash bulbs, animal cries, and crowd noises.

“Raging Bull” is the kind of movie that may be a little hard to get into at first, but once you’re hooked, it rarely lets go. The plot is unbelievably structured because we get to see the steps leading to the demise of Jake. The movie itself is very dark. It deals with the effects of low self-esteem as well as the fears that lead some men to abuse women. One of the toughest opponents Jake La Motta ever faced. . .was a man named of Jake La Motta. One reoccurring theme I noticed was that there are scenes where he stands passively, his hands at his side, allowing himself to be hammered. We sense why he didn't go down. He hurt too much to allow the pain to stop. Allowing himself to take blow after blow from his opponents was his penance for how he treats his loved ones.

The acting in this film is one of the best I have ever seen. De Niro won best actor for the leading role in ‘Raging Bull’ as Jake La Motta. De Niro portrays La Motta as both a shallow and complex man. Throughout the film he is referred to as an animal due to both his eating habits and his uncontrollable and almost always physically abusive temper. He tends to deal with his shortcomings and insecurities b
