Objective- To be able to understand the effect that rubber cement has on a seed of Sweet Corn in comparison to a seed of Sweet Corn without rubber cement.

Hypothesis- If the seeds without rubber cement applied to them grow more than the seeds with rubber cement applied to them, because rubber cement will close off the oxygen and water supply to the plant.

Variables- The Independent variable will be the oxygen supplied to the seed and the dependant variable will be the water supplied to the seed, how much rubber cement is applied to the seed.

1 Container of Sweet Corn (4 Actual Seeds)

1) Turn the Electronic Balance on and set to grams.

2) Set the petry dish on the scale and record weight.

3) Place a Sweet Corn seed in the petry dish and weigh it and record.

5) Take the Sweet Corn seed and thoroughly cover with the rubber cement. Place the seed in the petry dish holding

2) Take the wet paper towels out of the jar and carefully remove the paper from the seed. Measure the length in centimeters and record for each of the jars.

Data Analysis- The data in this lad was consistent except for when the second plant that wasn’t covered with rubber cement had its sprout broken off when I took it out of the paper towel. This sprout was a centimeter and one tenth long and was the plant which had shown the largest growth by far. I kept putting it in the paper towel like the rest of the plants in hopes that it would grow, which it did. Disappointingly, it only grew one tenth of a centimeter in the following week when I ended the experiment. The plants that were covered with rubber cement showed dramatic growth over the first weekend, but stayed at the same length after that day for the entirety of the lab. The other two plants that weren’t applied with the rubber cement showed steady growth for the most part except for number two which it’s sprout was broken off on the fifth day of the experiment.

8) Place another Sweet Corn seed in the petry dish and weigh. If it is not the same weight as the original seed replace it with another until you find one with the same weight. Then repeat step 4.

4) Wet the paper towel just like step 6 in the Set Up. Place the Lid onto it’s jar.
