American Inventions Before 1900

It is without a doubt that if the technology before 1900 didn’t exist in the United States of America, this country would be nowhere near as advanced as it is in comparison with today’s standards. Today we have inventions like the cell phone, which you can use to call someone halfway across the country. Where would that invention be if Alexander Graham Bell hadn’t invented the telephone? Nowadays the military uses the Colt M4. What if Samuel Colt never went into the arms business? This country would still be fairly primitive.

One of the most famous inventions in U.S. history is the Cotton Gin made by Eli Whitney. It was perhaps the most useful creation for its time. Patented in 1794, when many people in the South lived on plantations, it made picking cotton easier- much easier. However, poor old Whitney never became obtained wealth from his invention. Instead of buying the cotton gin, farmers opted to create counterfeit versions of the original.

In 1831, McCormick created the Reaping Machine, or the Reaper. This was similar in effect to the cotton gin, except with wheat. Of course, this was a lot more efficient than one person cutting it with a scythe. He attempted to sell the first one

in 1840, but only until he moved to Chicago did he make a lot of sales. He was selling 10,000 Reapers per year by 1871.

A big part of the common American dream is to have a family. Of course, most people will want to have a way to preserve the memories of their family. In 1888, the Kodak Camera was introduced by George Eastman. Although cameras were around at that time, they were big and clumsy- no one really wanted to carry them around. George Eastman changed all of that, for his new Kodak camera was compact and manageable. To have the photographs developed, one simply returned the camera to the manufacturer, who in turn developed the photos and reloaded the film. This invention, although not the last in quantity, is the last of quality. Until technology began to get better in the 20th Century, people began producing ludicrous inventions like the Automatic Hat and the Player Piano.

By now, you will notice that as time progresses, American inventors are beginning to create more and more inventions, each one having more usefulness than the last, respectively. As America became older as a nation, more and more of its citizens began to see ways of improving life as a whole.

Although nowhere near as important as the telephone, in 1882 Dr. Schuyler Skaats Wheeler improves the American standard of living by inventing the electric fan. Consisting of only two blades, it was meant to be desk-mounted. Nowadays, almost every American home has an electric fan of some sort, whether it is modeled after Wheeler’s design, or is a ceiling fan. This invention, although it doesn’t seem like much of a necessity, greatly decreases the chance for heat-stricken illnesses during the summertime.

America today heavily depends on literature. The newspapers and the Internet are loaded with it. Of cour
