Hidden Beauty
The Color Purple, a movie about a black female growing up in the early nineteen-hundreds, involves many concepts that apply to Interpersonal Communication. Interpersonal Communication is made up of many different aspects that teach people how to communicate with others at any level without concerns such as inferiority or low self-esteem. If only the characters in this movie knew than what we know now, maybe things could have been different for them. Poor blacks had very little education, most of the characters led a life of poverty and/or degradation. Celie, the main character in the movie suffered from a poor self-concept. Self-concept is how a person tends to view his or herself usually influenced by the people around them. For instance, until her teenage years, Celie lived with her step-father, a man who continually made her feel bad about herself. He forced himself upon her when he pleased and when she gave birth to two of his children, he took them from her and gave them up. Not only did he make her feel inferior but he made her feel ugly as well. He continually told her she was ugly and talked about it freely in front of other people by making statements about her “ugly smile”. Examples such
Of everything that this movie is trying to teach, it mostly teaches motivation. Motivational is a simple yet fitting word to describe this movie and its purpose. It teaches the audience that they can make it, that they can turn their life around no matter how hard it seems. Seeing these characters lives and what they had to go through makes the audience realize just how good they have it. And even if they are not leading the life they want to live, it is never to late to start over. This movie is showing people that are unsatisfied with their lives that there is hope, and there is a way to change, even if it is hard, it is still possible. This ties in very well with the title of the movie, The Color Purple. While, to a person who has not seen the movie this may seem like a bizarre title, it is referenced to in the last scene of the movie. Celie states that God has a plan, and God created beauty for people and nature to enjoy. There is beauty in everything, but sometimes it is a little harder to find. God created things such as the color purple for us to enjoy. We should walk by something that beautiful and appreciate it, take the time to really see the beauty in the world whether is be right in front of our face, or hidden from us for most of our lives. No matter how hard it may be to find that beauty in you own life, it will be worth it in the end. A self-fulfilling prophecy is when a person’s expectations of an event make that event more likely to occur than would have otherwise been true. Of all the people in Celie’s life, her sister younger Nettie was the one person she loved more than anyone. Nettie was torn from her at a young age when Mister threw her out of his house for not having sex with him. As Nettie was running from the house she yelled back to Celie, “Nothing but death can keep me from it”, reassuring Celie that they would write each other again no matter what it took. This incident and Celie’s love for her sister let Celie believe that she would again see her sister. This was Celie’s self-fulfilling prophecy, to one day, be reunited with her sister, and she waited for that day for many years. as these tend to lead to a person having a poor self-concept which is very difficult to change. In Celie’s case it took just about her whole life for her to realize what she was really worth. Although Celie left her step-father to be married at a very young age, she was not married for love, and her husband did not even find her attractive. She was once again living
