A Hero

Jack Sawyer is a retired homicide detective brought back into the game by a rather unconventional villain. He will travel between worlds to defeat this evil creature, in an attempt to save a boy’s life. Jack’s journey will be filled with battles against evil, supernatural forces, special weapons aiding him, and his heroic deeds. Stephen King, author of Black House, introduces the readers to a handsome, intelligent, and articulate man looking for peace and quiet. Until, a murderer terrorizes French Landing, Wisconsin. The chief of police needs Jack’s help. This is the beginning to Jack’s journey with the Fisherman.

Two children have disappeared from the little Wisconsin town and Jack has not gotten fully involved in the case. He helps were he can but he does not want that life again. Something is pulling him in though. He cannot explain what it is or why it is happening. Tyler Marshall, the third victim, has now disappeared. Jack sees that this is getting serious. He is getting “signs” from another world, the Territories. Robins’ eggs are showing up everywhere he goes, hundreds of robins’ breast feathers are pouring out of his home. He is at first quizzical about all of this, eventually, he

Jack heads to the meeting place to talk to the biker’s about the house. He finds out about Moose and the sense of evil forces around the house. They also tell him an even stranger thing about the house. It is all black everything about it is dark and cold. “The house seems to not want to be seen,”[608] it shrinks back into the woods and appears to move and change in front human eyes “ it won’t hold it shape… one moment it’s enormous, as if many houses have been overlaid. The entire city of London folded under a single weird roof.”[609] Jack asks the bikers if they will go back, he puts no pressure on the men. They volunteer willingly. Jack also recruits Dale, who is still new to the other world concepts.

For a few days he works with Dale Gilbertson, chief of police, trying to find any break they can. Then, a call comes in from a hotel on the other side of the city. A man named George Potter has been found with pictures of the dead children in his closet. The Fisherman has planted the pictures there and no one knows this. There is frenzy in the town as the word gets out. Potter is brought into the station to be questioned; most of the town shows up to. Jack does not believe Potter is their man but he questions him to see if there is some connection, maybe revenge. Potter tells Jack about a house in the woods, a folk tale now. This was a dark house a man he knew had built. Many of the men working on this house had become sick or injured on the job. They began to tell stories that this house was haunted before it was even built. Jack knows he has to find this house. Dale is becoming worried about the time they have with Potter because there is an angry group outside wanting to see the man that hurt there town. Leading the group was the mother of the second victim, the little girl. She was screaming at the police to give Potter to them. Jack has to break up this crowd or they will never be able to keep the innocent Potter safe. All of the sudden Jack’s phone rings. Parkus, his friend from the Territories, tells him to go the Dale’s private bathroom there will be something to help him in there. Jack goes and finds flowers, lilies from the Territories. Jack is not sure how to use them but he decides it will come to him when they are needed. Jack heads out to see the crowd. The mother of the little girl walks up to Jack demanding Potter. All Jack does is hand her the flowers, she smells the sweet scent and is somehow transformed into a sweet, humble person. She turns around to go back to her home to rest from her long night. There was something special in those flowers and Jack knows this is another call from the Territories.

In this world Ty is being chained in a dungeon of some kind. He is lonely and scared. He has dreams about his mother talking to him telling him to hold on and he will be safe if he just holds on. Mr. Munshun, the lord of this land, is on his way from the Crimson King to get Ty and bring him back. Jack and the others are traveling along a dirt road, lined with a wall of skulls. They hear machines in the distance and the slaves running the machines. Men, green men, are guarding the children by the machines. Their whips are cracking continuously. While walking up the road one of the green men try to stop Jack and the others. He is growling at them but Jack raises the bat and the green man begins to get quiet and shudder. The bat now has a brilliant white light surrounding it. The green man turns and runs from the men. Jack knows he has the power in this world and with that thought he has the strength to go on.

Jack’s journey didn’t end in fame and pride but in his own captivity. He battled with evils of other worlds, Munshun and the Fisherman. The Territories, through the simple “gifts” the robin’s eggs and lilies, gave him help. With those gifts he also received weapons to fight off the evil, the flowers and the bat that ended Munshun. The magic is what saved everyone.
