K-PAX, which is directed by Iain Softley, is a science fiction drama starring Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges. Charles Leavitt adapted the thought provoking story based on Gene Brewer's 1995 novel. The movie told the story of “Prot“, a mental patient at the Psychiatric Institute of Manhattan, who claimed to be from another planet called “K-PAX“. The medical staff at the hospital diagnosed Prot as delusional and placed him under the care of Dr. Mark Powell for treatment. Once in Dr. Powell's capable hands, however, Prot provided some convincing evidence making people believe he could be from another planet. The question the film asks the audience to answer is whether Prot is from another galaxy or whether he is Robert Porter, a man suffering from amnesia and delusion due to the tragic death of his wife and daughter. Upon viewing the movie, the audience could conclude that Prot is an alien for the following reasons: he had physical abilities that were beyond human capability and he had knowledge of things that no one else knew.
In addition to his physical capabilities, Prot had complex knowledge of astronomy and he possessed information about astrophysics not yet discovered by the human race. During his first treatment session with Dr. Powell, Prot revealed information about K-PAX and the nature of his visit to Earth. According to Prot, K-PAX was a large planet approximately 1000 light years away in the constellation Lyra. He told Dr. Powell he traveled to Earth on a beam of light to compile information for his report regarding the “Class BA-III planet“ that Prot said was in its early stages of evolution. Dr. Powell questioned Prot's method of travel by explaining to him Einstein's theory that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. Prot rebuffed and told Dr. Powell: I would say you misread what Einstein was saying. What he actually said is that nothing can accelerate to the speed of light because its mass would become infinite. Einstein said nothing about entities already traveling at the speed of light or faster, at tachyon speeds.
